Android 17 Update: Which Phones Get It and What's New
22 Sep 2026 · 2 min read
Android 17 is the newest version of Android. Google released it for Pixel phones by June 2026, and other brands are now rolling out their own versions. Here is what changes and when your phone might get it.
What's new in Android 17
- Floating app windows: open a small window of one app over another, for example a WhatsApp chat on top of YouTube.
- Call screen reactions: fun video effects during video calls.
- Better "mark as lost": if your phone is stolen, you can lock it and show a message from another device, and the thief has a harder time resetting it.
- More Gemini AI: Google's assistant can read what is on your screen and help with it, such as summarising a long message.
- Battery and speed improvements on older phones.
Which phones get Android 17?
- Google Pixel: Pixel 6 and newer got it first. The new Pixel 11 ships with it.
- Samsung: Android 17 comes as One UI 9. It is expected from late 2026 to early 2027 for the Galaxy S, Z and recent A series. The new Galaxy Z Flip 8 ships with Android 17 already.
- Xiaomi, Redmi, Oppo, Vivo, Infinix and Tecno: usually a few months after Samsung, starting with their flagships. Budget phones may get it later or not at all.
How to check for the update
Go to Settings, then Software update (or System, then System update) and tap Check for updates. Charge your phone above 50% and use Wi-Fi before installing.
Why updates matter when buying used
A phone that still gets updates is safer and keeps its resale value. Before buying a used phone, check which Android version it runs and whether the brand still supports it. Read our used phone checklist and the AI features explained.
