Verified Phones in Pakistan: What a Verified Used Phone Really Means

Scroll through any marketplace in Pakistan and you'll see the word "verified" everywhere: "PTA verified", "verified seller", "100% verified phone". But nobody agrees on what it means. Here's what a verified used phone should be, so you know exactly what you're paying for.
A verified phone passes five checks
A used phone is only truly verified when all five of these are true.
1. PTA approved. The IMEI is registered with PTA, so the phone works with any Pakistani SIM, permanently. Check it by sending the IMEI to 8484.
2. IMEI matches. The number you get by dialing *#06# matches the IMEI printed on the box and in Settings > About phone.
3. Not reported stolen. The phone isn't blocked or listed as lost. A blocked phone can stop working the day after you buy it.
4. No account lock. iCloud (iPhone) or Google account (Android) is signed out, so you can set the phone up as your own.
5. Condition is honest. Battery health, screen, cameras and buttons match what the ad says.
If a seller can't show you all five, the phone isn't verified, however many times the ad uses the word.
"PTA verified" is not the same as "verified"
Many ads say "PTA verified" and stop there. PTA approval only tells you the phone will keep working on Pakistani networks. It says nothing about whether the phone is stolen, locked to someone else's account, or has a battery at 70%. Treat PTA as check number one, not the whole list.
Verified seller vs verified phone
These are two different things:
- A verified seller is a person or shop whose identity has been checked.
- A verified phone is a device that passed the checks above.
You want both. A trusted shop can still sell a phone with a weak battery, and an honest individual can unknowingly sell a phone with an account still signed in.
