PTA Tax on Installment in Pakistan: Your Options Explained

12 Sep 2026 · 3 min read

Update (September 2026): the Finance Act 2026-27 now allows PTA tax on imported phones to be paid in installments from 1 July 2026. Read PTA tax in installments: new rule explained.

PTA tax on a flagship phone can be a big one-time payment, so many people search for a way to pay it in installments. Here is how the payment actually works, and the practical ways people in Pakistan spread the cost.

How PTA tax is normally paid

When you register a phone on PTA's DIRBS system, you receive a PSID (a payment slip ID) with the amount due. That amount is paid in one go through a bank app, ATM, or bank branch. PTA itself does not split the PSID into monthly installments.

Because rules change, always check the DIRBS portal (dirbs.pta.gov.pk) for the latest process before relying on any option below.

Ways to spread the cost

1. Credit card installment plans

Some banks in Pakistan let credit card holders convert large payments into monthly installments. If your bank allows the PSID payment to be paid by card and converted, you effectively pay the tax in installments to the bank. Ask your bank about:

  • Whether PSID or government payments are eligible
  • The markup or processing fee
  • The number of months available

2. Buy a PTA-approved phone on installment instead

Often the simplest route is to skip the tax problem entirely. Many authorised retailers, banks and some mobile networks offer official PTA-approved phones on monthly installments. The tax is already included in the price, and you get a local warranty.

3. Buy a used PTA-approved phone

A used PTA-approved phone can cost less than a new non-PTA phone plus its tax. Browse PTA-approved phones on VerifiedPhones and compare.

Avoid these "installment" offers

  • Agents who offer to register your phone and collect payments monthly. Registration happens only through DIRBS and the official PSID. Anyone else is a risk.
  • "Patch" approvals sold on installments. These are unofficial and phones can be blocked later.
  • Deals that ask you to share your CNIC or OTP codes. Never share them. Read phone scams in Pakistan.

Work out the real cost first

Before choosing any plan, add up:

  • The phone price
  • The PTA tax on your PSID
  • Any markup from the installment plan

Then compare that total with a PTA-approved phone's price. For expensive phones like the iPhone 17 Pro Max, a PTA-approved unit is often the better deal. See PTA tax on iPhone and PTA tax on mobile phones.

Frequently asked questions

Is it legal to buy a non-PTA phone? Yes, but it won't work permanently on a Pakistani SIM until the tax is paid.

How do I check after paying? Send the IMEI to 8484. See PTA approved check online.
