PTA Tax on Mobile Phones in Pakistan: How It's Calculated and What to Expect

11 Oct 2026 · 2 min read

If you've ever seen "non-PTA, cheaper" next to a phone ad, PTA tax is the reason. Here's what it is and why it affects price so much.

Why PTA tax exists

The Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) requires every phone's IMEI to be registered through its DIRBS system before it can use a local SIM permanently. Phones brought into Pakistan without going through official import channels need this tax paid to be registered; phones sold by authorised local distributors usually already have it included in the retail price.

What decides the amount

  • The phone's declared value — generally, a pricier flagship attracts a higher tax than a budget phone.
  • Whether it's a passport-based or CNIC-based registration, which affects the exemption amount available.
  • How the phone entered the country — officially imported stock vs. a phone brought in personally or through informal channels.

Because the exact formula and exemption slabs can change, the one place to get a current, reliable number is PTA's own DIRBS portal (dirbs.pta.gov.pk) or the 8484 SMS service, never a guess from a shop or a social media post.

What this means when buying used

  • A PTA-approved phone has this tax already paid — you're buying a phone that's ready to use indefinitely on any Pakistani SIM, and the price reflects that.
  • A non-PTA phone is cheaper precisely because this tax hasn't been paid. It can still work on Wi-Fi, and on a local SIM for a limited trial period, before losing service unless the tax is paid.
  • Before agreeing to pay for the tax yourself on a non-PTA phone, check the actual amount on DIRBS first — for some flagship models, it can be a large fraction of the phone's resale price.
