Selling a Phone: What Papers and Receipt to Give the Buyer
25 Jul 2026 · 2 min read
A short written receipt takes two minutes and protects both you and the buyer. If there is ever a question about where the phone came from or when it changed hands, the receipt answers it.
Why a receipt matters
- It proves the sale date. If the phone is used wrongly after you sold it, you can show it was no longer yours.
- It records the condition. "Sold as seen, buyer checked the phone" prevents later complaints.
- It helps the buyer. When they resell, a chain of receipts shows the phone was bought legally.
A simple receipt template
Write this on paper or in a message, and both of you keep a copy:
> Mobile phone sale receipt
> Date:
> Seller name and CNIC number:
> Buyer name and CNIC number:
> Phone: brand, model, storage, colour
> IMEI 1:
> IMEI 2:
> Price paid: Rs
> Payment method: cash / bank transfer / JazzCash / Easypaisa
> Condition: sold as seen, checked and accepted by the buyer
> Seller signature:
> Buyer signature:
You can find the IMEI by dialling `*#06#`. A photo of each other's CNIC is common practice, but only share it with a buyer you have met in person, and you can cover the parts you do not want to share.
What else to hand over
- The original box, if you have it. The IMEI on the box should match the phone.
- The original purchase bill or warranty card. This adds trust and may be needed for warranty claims.
- Charger and cable, if included in the price.
- Any case or screen protector you agreed to include.
What to keep
- Your SIM cards and memory card
- A copy of the receipt
- A photo of the buyer's CNIC, if you exchanged them
Warranty transfer
If the phone is still under official warranty, the warranty usually stays with the phone, not with you. Give the buyer the warranty card and bill. Read selling a phone under warranty for more.
What about PTA registration?
PTA approval stays with the phone's IMEI, so the buyer can use it with their own SIM. You do not need to transfer anything. See what happens when you sell a PTA registered phone.
